Overnight trains can give you a huge advantage over other types of transportation. At the same time you can sleep throughout the entire trip, as well as save the cost of a hotel. It’s definitely a different experience and certainly worth pursuing, though you should make sure to wear a money belt.
A money belt will keep your most important belongings safe from ‘curious’ eyes, usually under your clothes. You can keep your credit cards, currency and documents out of reach from others. They come in several types: although the most traditional ones are strapped around your waist, there are also models to be strapped around your legs or hang them on your neck. No matter what type suits your preferences better, you’ll sure be better off with one of these in an overnight train.
Think about it: if traveling alone, you may end up in a cabin with people you don’t know. I don’t know about you, but I’m a heavy sleeper. The thing I like the most about money belts is that I can allow myself to sleep comfortably, instead of worrying about someone’s hands trying to reach my wallet. Not to mention that, if I were a girl, I’d have to worry about my entire purse as well. A money belt, by definition, will always be close to my skin. If anybody tries something out of the ordinary, I’ll definitely wake up.
Also, if your cabin doesn’t have a lock, how can you protect your possessions from other passengers on the train? Keep your documents and money safe and worry about enjoying your trip, instead of worrying about other things.
You can also leave the cabin temporarily to use the restroom or go out to eat. Although I personally believe that jewelry should be left at home, you may also carry these outside with you and feel safer if and when you need to leave the cabin.
Truth be told: we don’t know how local thieves and pickpockets act. It’s a lot simpler to prevent theft then going to the local embassy to get a new passport. Money belts are small and comfortable enough, so you can wear them and avoid major headaches later.
